| IN AND AROUND |
There are many art galleries scattered around the square that can be visited all year round. The town is surrounded by spectacular sandstone mountains, with a wonderful climate and regular sporting and cultural events. Its location within the Drakensberg makes Clarens ideal for photography – this can definitely be considered as one of the most picturesque places in South Africa. Clarens is also famous for trout fishing. Nearby (less than 20 km) is the Golden Gate Highlands National Park with its sandstone formations and cliffs, as well as the Ash River for white-water rafting.
Clarens is part of the scenic ‘golden route’ called the Highlands Treasure Route along the Maluti Mountains and neighbouring Lesotho. There are many things to see and do, but general activities include horse-riding, abseiling, hiking, fly-fishing, fossil hunting, white-water rafting, and golf. Live music is often performed on weekends and there are multiple craft beer and gin restaurants all over the town.
